NOAA Storm Classifications

The NHC used the wind speed and forecasted wind speed to determine current system class and expected class at landfall.

<39 MPH = Tropical Depression

39-73 MPH = Tropical Storm

>74 MPH = Hurricane

74-95 MPH = Category 1 Hurricane – Very dangerous winds will produce some damage

96-110 MPH = Category 2 Hurricane – Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage

111-129 MPH = Category 3 Hurricane (Major) – Devastating damage will occur

130-156 MPH = Category 4 Hurricane (Major) – Catastrophic damage will occur

>157 MPH = Category 5 Hurricane (Major) – Catastrophic damage will occur
